Educating Employees--Where Do You Stand?

During a recent conversation, I had someone ask me my opinion on continuous learning within corporate America. "It appears that learning within companies stopped long ago and on a national basis, what do you think?"

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Many companies seem to feel that they have the right to increase expectations and that employees are personally responsible for getting the training they need to fulfill those responsibilities.

I disagree with this approach, yes it encourages employees to take responsibility for their own actions and potential within the company, but what it also does is show the employee that the company is only willing to “take” from them.

When a company shows they are interested in growing/educating their employees, the employees are more willing to take on those extra initiatives and will be more loyal to the company reducing turnover—assuming it’s an employee you should hold on to.

That being said, I do know of a lot of companies who do put a strong and continous effort into educating their employees. So let's not punish the good. Kudos to the companies that still 'do it right'!

How do you feel about this topic?
